Premier’s Physical Activity Council

Nominations for the 2009 Medibank Private Active Tasmania Awards: 15 June - 31 July 2009.

The 2009 Medibank Private Active Tasmania Awards are now open with prize money of up to $31 000 available across five major categories!

Local councils, schools and community organisations from around the state are invited to enter their physical activity initiatives in this years’ awards program.

The Medibank Private Active Tasmania Awards are an initiative of the Premier’s Physical Activity Council together with Medibank Private.  The awards acknowledge the crucial role that local government, schools and community groups play in promoting and facilitating physical activity across Tasmania. They also recognise the innovation and creativity of communities in promoting the benefits of physical activity and creating communities that are active and healthy.

The awards have become enormously popular, with Tasmanian communities taking great pride in their physical activity initiatives and showing increasing enthusiasm to share their ideas with the rest of the state. They are a fantastic way to recognise schools and communities who are encouraging physical activity in their local area.

This year, in addition to the five major categories, one Move Well Eat Well member school will receive a $1 000 prize for displaying initiative in promoting one or more of the Move Well Eat Well health messages.

Nominate your local council, community group or school or by distributing the entry form to relevant groups in your area.  If you would like more information about the awards or further copies of the entry form please phone free call 1800 440 026, email businesspoint@development.tas.gov.au or visit www.getmoving.tas.gov.au.

The Tasmanian Minister for Energy and Resources David Llewellyn, recently launched a unique Chain of Custody certification programme.

Fine Timber Tasmania Inc. will manage a Chain of Custody certification program that conforms to the requirements of Australian Standard AS4707-2006 Chain of Custody for certified wood and forest products.

The not-for-profit organisation will own and manage the program which has been developed in response to the rising consumer trend for proof of the social and environmental integrity of wooden products- particularly high-value craft and furniture items.

Tasmanian Association of Community Houses (TACH):  State Conference

St Helens 24 - 26 September 2008

The TACH State Conference saw over 170 volunteers, committee members and staff from 31 Neighbourhood & Community Houses, as well as the government and other organisations that support them, gather at St Helens on the beautiful East Coast for 3 days jam packed full of fun, professional development and networking.

The theme, “Building Bridges” helped to think about how to work with partners and other organisations to develop projects and programmes that will offer support and services to everyone in the community.  There was a strong focus on training for voluntary management committees with workshops on industrial relations, good management, child care, financial reporting and many more.

Susan Sandery, the guest speaker, shared her inspiring journey, from volunteering at St Helens Neighbourhood House to current work as the Manager of Employment, Training and Community Development for Laynhapuy Homelands Association in the Northern Territory.  Susan thanked St Helens Neighbourhood House for helping her through some extremely tough personal times and enabling her to re-discover her confidence, skills and abilities.  Her key advice was: It’s never too late to start learning; it’s never too late to change direction.

Neighbourhood & Community Houses are where Tasmanians come together to build stronger and more vibrant communities for all. The conference was a great chance to celebrate that work over the last year.
